They could have done much worse

The Falcons actually salvaged a decent draft with only five picks. Sometimes it seems when teams are short on draft picks, they'll reach more especially when they won't pick again for another 64 selections. But the Falcons didn't, and that was pretty impressive.

Going in, I felt the Falcons needs were LB, WR, #2 CB, OT, and a solution for the Duckett problem. The Falcons attempted to address 4 of the 5, so that's not bad. Dante earlier stated something about an "oft-overlooked #3 QB", and obviously, someone noticed.

Getting Jimmy Williams, especially in the 2nd round was good value and a seemingly safe pick. Amazing. That's 1.

Then in Round 3, they grab Jerious Norwood, who was indeed a third round value. They didn't reach for another position. That's 2.

And really, anything after that would be a big question mark anyways, so taking Ojinnaka in round 5 and Jennings in the 6th may have been unnecessary (they probably were going to be UDFA), but they did take a tackle and WR, and obviously ones they value. So there's two more.

And sawb did ask for the Falcons to get at least one UGA dawg and they did, getting Shockley to hopefully backup the mobile Vick, because everyone knows Schaub is gone next year.

Not bad. Not stellar, but you won't get stellar with the picks the Falcons had anyways. The important thing is they didn't completely blow it by any means. I mean, crap, they drafted better than several other teams who had a full deck of picks. Now they've also added 12 UDFAs and will likely add that WR Bergeron guy from the Georgia Force, so it looks like they'll be doing okay. I got to hand to them dirty birds: it wasn't a bad weekend.

I'm just happy that not one of the picks was a tight end, even if it did mean that Pope would never be Falcon. Rich McKay did similar work in Tampa at the end of Dungee's tenure when they didn't have very high picks anymore. I sure hope he doesn't get that Commissioner job. I'd hate to see Atlanta lose the Tex Schramm of this generation.

I was going to make a joke about them not taking a TE, but I looked it up and they haven't taken one for about 4 or 5 straight years. Yes, I was shocked as well.

It's kind of like Billy Bennett. H really didn't miss all that many kicks, but the ones he did...
